Auto Tech Auto Repair Service

Questions from buyers.

What is the purpose of a pre purchase inspection?

It is a process where a qualified unbiased technician inspects the car to discover any problems that the seller / buyer may not be aware of.  The inspection enables the buyer to make an educated and informed buying decision.

An inspection may find prior accident damage, evidence of major repairs or lack of general maintenance services, safety and even future potential problems. Remember used car book values do not take in consideration maintenance and repairs that may be needed, so negotiating on these may save money.

How does your service work?

Once you find the vehicle you are interested in give us a call. Calling a day ahead to schedule your appointment is typically best.  Our inspection normally takes 3 hours from the time we start on it so most people bring it in first thing and pick up in the afternoon.   Once we inspect the vehicle you will receive the report showing what items passed or failed.  We will review the items with you and answer any further questions.  If you are out of town, the seller can bring the vehicle here for the appointment. They are welcome to wait for the service or we do offer transportation in the Lexington area.  We can fax or email you the inspection report and take payment over the phone if this is helpful.

The dealer says it's "Certified" so why the need for an inspection?

Dealers can make up their own process to determine whether a car is "certified" or not.  Many times, certified cars are still under manufacture warranty or they have low  miles and new enough to be eligible for the consumer to buy an extended warranty. There are no industry standards of what "certified" means.

What about CARFAX reports?

These documents show the consumer when the vehicle was registered and at what mileage.  It may show accident history but every repair facility, insurance organization and state government have different reporting guidelines for what gets federally reported. Therefore many issues may go unfound by CARFAX,  and those unreported problems are NOT covered under their guarantee. It may not show repairs paid for out of pocket.  It will not show potential or existing mechanical problems or the overall condition of the vehicle.

What is an "AS-IS" Document?

This is the purchase agreement that you make with the used car dealer.  Buyers have no rights after the sell unless documented on the agreement.  Please read this agreement carefully.  Have all inspections and any negotiated repairs performed prior to signing the agreement.

Does Kentucky have a return policy?

Some dealers may have this as a business policy but it is not required by law and should not be assumed. Take no verbal return agreements from a salesman, get it in writing. There are no laws that buyers can get their money back.  Our Advice? Get an inspection done, make sure it's the car you want.  The Lemon Law applies only to New Car Sales.

What about extended warranties?

Dealers are not required to offer any extended warranties for the used vehicles  offered on their lot.  If a warranty is offered, it must be in writing to be considered legitimate.  Manufacture's warranties are different then extended warranties.  So make sure the differences are explained and the warranty details are explained. You may find extended warranties through other sources instead of buying straight from the dealer.
